  The Killer Fog of 1952

Wendy

In 1952, a thick fog and blackcoal smoke killed thousands ofLondoners in four days. Theso-called killer fog changed theway the world looks at pollution. Before the incident, people in citiescould accept pollution as a part oflife. Afterward, they fought to limitthe poisonous(有毒的 ;有害的)sideeffects of the industrial age.

Cribb still remembered themoment he saw the first graysmog, “like somebody had set aload of car tires on fire.” OnFriday Dec. 5, he was driving todowntown, with many cars closebehind. He didn’t know a disasterwas brewing. He didn’t know thata mass of bad air had just come.

Cribb remembered being shocked by the blackness of thegathering fog. After a few minute she couldn’t see the curb from hisspot. After a few more minutes, itturned worse and worse.“It’s likeyou were blind,”says Cribb.

Everyone in London walkedblind for the next four days. Bythe tim on Tuesday Dec. 9,thousands of Londoners weredead, and thousands more wereabout to die.

In winter,as the smoke comingout of London’s chimneys mixed with natural fog, the air turnedcolder. Londoners heaped morecoal on their fires, making moresmoke. Soon it was so dark thatsome said they couldn’t see theirfeet.

Roads were littered with abandoned cars. Midday concerts were cancelled due to totaldarkness. On the second day ofthe smog, Saturday, Dec. 6, 500 people died in London. When the ambulances stopped running, thousands of Londoners walked through the smog to the city’s hospitals. Some 900 more people died on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1952. Then the wind swept in unexpectedly. The killer fog vanished as quickly as it had arrived.

The Problems and Impacts of Air Pollution

Millions of people in China and Hong Kong are breathing bad air every day. The air pollution is caused by coal-fired power plants, factories and vehicles.

Air pollution often haslong-term health impacts that build-up slowly over time. It ha sbeen linked to increasedincidences ofcancer, heartdisease, stroke and respiratory illnesses. On a less severe level,it is associated with asthma (气喘;哮喘)in children, and thus impairedquality of life for many kids.
